Read This If You Feel Like Giving Up On Your Engineering Dream

This comedian may never know what it feels like to be an engineer. But he knows the struggle of being constantly discouraged to follow our dreams.

Back in 2014, Jim Carrey gave his commencement address to the students of Maharishi University of Management. I’ve always loved listening to his speech since his words can inspire his listeners to never give up on their dreams.

This comedian may have had major flops in his film career and he may never know what it feels like to be an engineer. But he knows what it feels like to live in a society where we are constantly discouraged to follow our dreams. Here are some of the highlights of his speech that could help you feel inspired to get back on track and pursue what you’ve always wanted to do with your engineering career.

“Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Don’t let anything stand in the way of the light that shines through this form. Risk being seen in all of your glory.”

Some of us are afraid to let our voices be heard because we don’t want to be seen as different or weird. But as Mr. Carrey puts it, fitting in for acceptance will only make you invisible.

“Your job is not to figure out how it’s going to happen for you, but to open the door in your head and when the doors open in real life, just walk through it. Don’t worry if you miss your cue. There will always be another door opening. They keep opening.”

Doors keep opening for us, engineers. With today’s technology, a new idea can change the world as we see it. So go ahead, keep seeking for those opportunities to grow as an engineer and stop worrying about your future.

“You can spend your whole life imagining ghosts and worrying about the pathway to the future but all there will ever be is what’s happening here and the decisions we make in this moment.”

What you choose to do now is important. Whether it’s for an exam or for a job report, you better make a move. Stop worrying if you’ll pass the exam or if you’ll be good enough for your boss. Act now and let those actions be rewarded later on.

“I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”

I believe that doing what you love can really make a difference in how you’ll succeed in life. We know a lot of people who gave up on their dreams and failed in the path they didn’t want to choose. Let Mr. Carrey’s story remind you that if you’re going to take risks, you might as well do it for something you are passionate about.

“So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect, so we never dare to ask the universe for it. I’m saying, I’m the proof that you can ask the universe for it.”
