When it comes to applying for jobs, it’s important to know what to include and exclude in our resumes. This also applies to our LinkedIn profiles. What we want our future employers to know about ourselves are the important details – information that will help them decide whether we’re fit for the job or not. That doesn’t include petty experiences we’ve had in the past.

Sensitive Information

Don’t add information that you consider private such as ethnicity or religion. It may harm your chances at getting a job.

Home phone number

Try giving out your mobile phone number instead. It’s a better and quicker way to reach you.

Salary Figures

For LinkedIn accounts, don’t let people know how much you earn. Never!

Long Job Descriptions

Not everyone wants to read long job descriptions.

Photos on Resumes

It is preferred not to have a photo attached in a resume but in a LinkedIn profile instead.

Email Accounts Created In The Past

That embarrassing account you made that shows your love for Nickleback? Better not use that at all. Delete it right now!

High School Jobs

Including high school jobs in your resume may look like you don’t have much experience before you took this job.

Poor Grammar

Want to give your resume a good impression? Having good grammar helps! Avoid typos as well.

References

Recruiters barely contact references. It is better if you wait for them to ask for it instead of putting it on your resume. They’re considered fillers for people that don’t have much experience.

A Second Page

It is standard to have one page only when submitting a resume. Better avoid adding a new one.

Objectives

Objectives are just fillers. They don’t seem helpful at all for you.
