How Routines Help Engineers Finish Their Grunt work

It’s the secret to getting things done.

Have you ever wondered how other people are able to finish their daily tasks at work so effortlessly? They may complain once in awhile about grunt work, but they are still able to achieve their daily goals. Or, how some people are able to make work look so easy, when you are having such a difficult time balancing and managing your tasks for the day?

How do they do it?

Try to observe athletes. Yes, you read that right. Try to observe how they prepare for big events? Other than lucky items, meditation, there’s one thing that hones them into great athletes: Routine.

All athletes have specific routines that gets them into the right physical, mental, and emotional state to keep them continuously improving. They trust their routine, and stick with it. It’s the same with your career. Try asking yourself. Is your daily work routine helping you excel in your career? Is your current routine helping you achieve your career goals?

If your answer is yes, then that’s awesome! But if you somehow hesitates and said “It’s not really helping me” then you’ll need to tweak your daily routine a bit (or a lot) depending on your situation.

List it Down

Start of by listing down your current routine, and see what improvements you can add. Arrange your routine in the order that will make you most productive. For example, don’t schedule a #1 priority task at a time slot where you are usually sleepy like after lunch break. Schedule it in the morning when you’re still full of energy. Another point of improvement would be to create a planner if you still don’t have one. Be organized and schedule all your tasks for the day, and arrange them in terms of priority.

Erase

If there is one reason why employees become unproductive at work, it’s because of wasted time. Scan through your current routine and eliminate all time that is wasted. Take away that 4th and 5th coffee break. Refrain from gossiping with your colleagues during work hours. You’ll be surprised with how much wasted time you’ve eliminated.

Trial

The next thing you’re going to do is put your newly created schedule to the test. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t perfectly work during your first day. Jot down notes on your planner why it didn’t work (i.e. the time wasn’t enough, the schedule you placed it in was wrong, etc.)

As you continue your routine trial, edit the changes you deem are needed for your new routine.

Inform your Boss

It can be difficult to create a new routine and stick to it. So inform your teammates and boss about your new routine. Your boss may help you with some tips, and will also be informed of the changes you’ve made with your day.

Stick to it

Just like sticking to a diet, following work routines can be hard. They say it takes 21 days to create a habit, so try to stick with your new routine for that long and observe the changes it will bring to your career.
