Why Good Engineers Leave a Mark and Great Engineers Make an Impact

To become an engineer is to answer a calling. The label does not limit one to being good in building stuff, it comes with a nobler purpose.

To live the engineering way does not always equate to earning more zeroes on your paycheck. The herculean task that is reserved to perpetual research, monitoring, and improvement do not cease by the end of a single project.

To become an engineer is to answer a calling. The label does not limit one to being good in building stuff, it comes with a nobler purpose.

Engineers are Heroes Too

While being good in academics is an outstanding feat, the common misconception is that those who are practicing the discipline are arrogant batch of intellectuals whose only job is to boast their supremacy in terms of Algebra and higher math.

But the thing is that engineers should be given more credit other than that. Engineers are heroes too. They may not be the ones you see in hospitals doing the operating procedures or the ones you see in battlefields fighting wars but they are the ones working the solutions from behind.

Good engineers dedicate their entire lives to reinvent the way people see the world and revolutionize the way they experience it. They leave a mark through a hard-earned process of hard work. And while they may seem cold and hard on the façade they dedicate every design to suit the best interest of the general public’s safety and convenience.

The Path to Greatness

An invention can only be revolutionary if it reaches beyond everyone’s expectations. It is something that is unlike before, not easily replicated, and most importantly something that solves a long-struggled problem.

But is this what you need to become great? To become someone extraordinary?

Well, it is not the case all the time. The key to greatness is impact. What tells apart a great engineer from a good one is his ability to inspire others. It doesn’t matter if you consider yourself average. Engineers are not designed that way. Engineers are the most effective instrument in helping other people. No matter how small it is, what matters is that through the work done, you get to produce ripples that will forever change people’s lives.

And if you are someone who wishes to walk the same path, here are some tips that will help you navigate through the way.

  • Never doubt yourself. Only when an engineer doubts himself is the time he is reduced to someone inferior. Focus on your objectives and try the best you can to endure failures by believing that what you are doing is to serve the common good.
  • Your choices matter. It will define the kind of engineer you’ll become. Not everyone can be an engineer because only the ones who can make the right decisions in life can influence change. And if you are to be someone the public will look up to, it is only natural to be extra wise.
