Engineers, You Don’t Have To Act Tough All The Time

You’re no superman, honey.

Let’s say you just had the absolute worst day ever, and you’re trying your best to be tough amidst this damned day! Let’s say, you were a failure at a major client meeting at work because your flashdrive containing your presentation was corrupt, because your co-worker downloaded some file on the internet that had a virus in it. You feel that no day could be worse than what you’re experiencing right now, and you suddenly wish that the floors would just swallow you whole and end this miserable day along with you.

Unfortunately, you can’t. So you toughen up and do your best to get on with your day, because you are a strong and independent engineer who won’t falter whatever the trials may be. Even if it’s crushing you deep inside.

It may seem brave, but if this is what you try to do every time you have a problem, then you may be doing it wrong.

Sometimes, we need to understand, that we aren’t robots. We are human beings that have feelings, and sometimes it’s important to acknowledge that we are! We make mistakes, we fail, we get hurt, we are not perfect, and that’s okay! Stop putting up a front that you’re impervious, because you’re not. By continuously suppressing your rage, anger, or sadness, you’re just piling it up in your minds. A time will come where your mind won’t be able to contain it anymore and it could damage you mentally. This could lead to sicknesses like extreme anxiety, depression, or even suicidal tendencies.

So instead of bottling up what you feel, bring it all out. Go to the comfort room and cry it all out. Go somewhere where you can let shout your frustrations out. Share your problems with a friend. After all, we are social beings. It may not solve your problems, but it will make you feel a whole lot better.
