World’s First Hologram Telephone Call Delivered

South Korea’s KT and United States’ Verizon teamed up to make the world’s first live hologram international call service.

The future of telecommunications is looking bright after South Korea’s KT and United States’ Verizon teamed up to make the world’s first live hologram international call service. That’s thanks to the two mobile carriers’ 5G network.

KT CEO Hwang Chang-gyu and Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam met in Seoul to discuss ways to expand bilateral partnership on services under development, one of which is a live hologram video call.

The meeting was followed by a demonstration: someone from KT called up a Verizon employee who appeared as a hologram image on a monitor in the KT headquarters building.

Both telecom companies claim that this is world’s first successful end-to-end 5G network interworking, which was deployed over a 28 GHz spectrum.

“The collaboration under the current partnership of Verizon and KT has been very productive as shown by the demos we have seen today,” said the Verizon CEO. “We will continue to work together to lead the global 5G business by developing innovative technologies and services.”

The hologram live call is only one of KT’s flagship 5G-based immersive media services. Others are Sync View, 360-degree Live VR and Omni-View services now being studied by the International Telecommunication Union.

A KT spokesperson that upon commercializing 5G networks, 3-D hologram video calls will be available as one of the representative 5G-based services of the company. He added that through a complete hologram video call, users will be able to meet a person in a remote area in a real size in real time.
