The Next iPhone Might Get A Touch ID Sensor On the Rear

The touch ID sensor/ Home Button could possibly be moved to the rear of the upcoming iPhone 8 to make room for a bigger screen

Today, one of the new possible designs of the next iPhone was leaked on Twitter by user and known iPhone design leaker Sonny Dickson. Rumors say that Apples will announce 3 new devices this September- 2 upgrades versions of the iPhone 7 with better specs, and a new iPhone with a new design factor. This leak shows one of the possible designs of the latter.

What’s intriguing is that if you look at the design, you can clearly see a spot on the rear of the phone for the Touch ID sensor, also known as the home button.

It has 2 cameras on the back, oriented vertically instead of vertically, in contrast to the iPhone 7. If you look closely, you can see that Apple is considering going back to the industrial design of the old iPhones with flat sides and sharp angles (like the iPhone SE). If so, it’s probably made out of a single piece of aluminum as well.

It’s hard to see if there are any antenna lines on the diagram, but for sure, you can see that unlike the iPhone SE, it doesn’t have the glass panels on the top or the bottom of the phone. You can also observe that there’s a lighting port on the bottom of the phone, but no headphone jack.

Also, if you take a good look at the measurements, you’ll notice that this new device is half a centimeter wider and a centimeter taller than the iPhone 7. Except for the top part of the device will most likely have a front camera and a speaker grill, it’s clear that apple wants to replace the whole front of the device with a giant screen.

This is probably why Apple had to move the Touch ID sensor/ home button to the back of the phone. Apple’s initial plan was to embed the Touch ID sensor into the screen, but it doesn’t seem like they’re there yet, so they just moved it to the back of the device in the meantime.

It’s not as handy and elegant as having everything on the front of the screen, but as with all smartphones, you’ll probably get used to it, so it’s an acceptable compromise. This is probably just one of many proposed designs though.

We’ll just have to wait and see.
