This 3D-Printed Pizza Will Soon Become Part of the Astronaut’s Space Diet

Yay, 3D printing!

Astronauts know very well that one of the most unsatisfying parts of the job is the food they eat. Because of the limitations of the environment, they can’t cook like they do on Earth, so they only have compact, freeze-dried “space food” as meals. But now there’s finally some new flavor to their diet: pizza!

This Italian staple will be served by a 3D food printer that can be cooked in less than five minutes, using only dough and tomatoes to make the pizzas.

A startup called BeeHex will be serving these pizzas. It developed Chef 3D printers after raising $1 million in seed to fund the project.

Originally tailored for astronauts, Chef 3D printers are also set to serve humans on Earth. It’s not far that this printer will be beside the ranks of famous pizza places like Pizza Hut, Shakey’s, Papa John’s or Domino’s sooner than we expect.

However, customers cannot expect Chicago-style pizzas just yet. They will only be able to eat thin-crust pizza servings from Chef 3D.

But here’s the catch: the pizzas you eat can be customized to just about any shape. The company has made the system to take any jpg file and convert it into a pizza in the shape of that picture.

Chef 3D will do its job of squeezing the dough into the shape of the pizza you want through a nozzle. Separate nozzles will add the sauce and toppings before the pizza will be put into the oven. In only five minutes, the pizza will be up for grabs.

The printer also has a self-cleaning feature so later the astronauts will not have to worry cleaning its nozzles.

Now, BeeHex is waiting for its brainchild’s National Sanitation Foundation certification before the 3D food printer hits the market. The company also plans to put up an app with which the customers can have pizza choices on the dough, sauce and cheese as well as the size.
