It’s like Netflix, but for nerds.

If you’re tired of the usual content of online streaming services like fictional television series, then it’s time to become more informed while being lazy on your couch. There is what they call as CuriosityStream, which name gives away what it is all about.

This online streaming service focuses on scientific and fact-based documentaries. That’s why they call it the Netflix for science nerds.

It works just like any online streaming service. You have to pay for a plan, which in the case of CuriosityStream, is $3 per month for a basic package, $6 for standard, and $12 for premium. The difference in the package’s price lies in the availability of HD, Ultra HD and 4K videos.

But all of the packages include unlimited browsing of more than 1,700 programs covering science, technology, history and the arts. All episodes are commercial-free. You can check them yourself upon sign-up without having to spend, because the first 7 days are free for any of the three packages.

In the service, you can find shows from BBC and other public broadcasters, as well as 600 original content programs.

One of those original shows is Stephen Hawking’s Favorite Places, which is a tour of the black hole, exoplanet Gliese 832c, Saturn and other cosmic locales. It explains Hawking’s view of the matter through brilliant visual backgrounds like a computer-generated image of the turbulent region around a black hole. The scenes are mesmerizing.

Other than through computers and mobile devices, you can use streaming players like Roku and Apple TV to be able to use the service.

“When you look at television… there’s very little science on anymore,” says Steve Burns, CuriosityStream’s chief programming officer. He adds that subscribers “crave the substance that they’ve been missing on TV for so long.”

CuriosityStream has been operating for two years as of posting.
