China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) will build a prototype floating nuclear power plant. The floating nuclear power plant is set for completion by 2019.

Its subsidiary, National Power Institute of China (NPIC), had just completed the preliminary design of its ACP100 small modular reaction approved by the National Development and Reform Commission.

The floating power plant is said to provide electrical power to oil and gas drilling platforms. It will also bring power sources to remote islands and developing territories. The plant is said to carry out diversified needs such as water desalination aside from power generation to meet development needs.

CNNC has developed 100 Mwe ACP100S reactors and smaller versions of it that could be singularly used or in pairs for a floating plant. The intended design and usage can be opt depending on the optimum capacity needed.

The ACP100 reactor design has been developed in 2010 and the preliminary design in 2014. The reactor is integrated with water pressure principles with primary coolant circuit installed within the vessel. The multi-purpose reactor is designed for electricity production, steam production, heating and water desalination. Two units of ACP100 are said to be built in Putian County, Zhangzhou City, south of Fujian Province as a demonstration plant. The project is to be implemented by the joint venture of CNNC New Energy Corporation, a subsidiary of CNNC (51%) and China Guodian group.
