Dubai’s Apple Store Changes Shape According to the Weather

Its newest brick-and-mortar store changes its shape and temperature based on the city’s extreme weather.

When you step into an Apple Store, you’re pretty much greeted by the same old-same old building. Sleek shops, walls of usually one clean and bright color, gadgets displayed on a table, and modern simplistic architecture. All of these, with a logo of Apple overhead. It’s nice, but it gets pretty boring

Dubai’s Apple Store however, has broken free from that mold. Its newest brick-and-mortar store changes its shape and temperature based on the city’s extreme weather.

The highlight of the store is its automated and motorized window system. This keeps the store nice and cool whilst decreasing the cost of air conditioning. Eighteen 37-foot panels open and close over the course of the day, cooling down the store when the sun is at its peak and allowing shoppers to walk onto a public terrace in the cold evenings.

The windows, called “Solar Wings”, are made out of 340 carbon-reinforced polymer rods, making up one of the world’s largest kinetic art installations,” according to Apple.

That’s pretty great considering Dubai’s two seasons are hot and hotter, with the coldest month of the year being an average 24 degrees Celsius still. The weather’s also quite unpredictable, with random sandstorms, rain, and strong winds, which is why Apple had considered its climate when designing this store.

The store also plans to host live music events. This includes fireside chats with filmmakers and photographers, and workshops to teach its employees creative skills in photography, video, music, and more. It is part of Apple’s new “Today at Apple” campaign that’ll roll out to all 495 Apple Store locations worldwide within the next month.
