There have been rumors about Google developing a contact lens camera after the Glass did not do so well. But it looks like Sony is going to arrive to the technology first.
The tech company has filed a patent for a smart contact lens that would be capable of recording video. Sony has been awarded for it in April 2016.
Compared to other smart contact lenses which are focused in looking inwards, this patent is more of looking outwards, being a video recorder that is also a lens.
According to the patent approved, it is described as a contact lens that can be controlled by the user’s deliberate blinks, recording video on request.
Some would argue that it would be difficult for the user to record video as blinking is an involuntary body movement. Of course Sony has already thought of this and provided a solution.
There will be a sensors embedded in the lens that is capable of detecting the difference between voluntary and involuntary blinks.
Around the iris, there sits the image capture and storage technology. The piezoelectric sensors would convert the movements of the eye into energy to power the lens.
So far it’s all a concept as the technology still doesn’t fit in a contact lens.
But the applications are up to anyone’s imagination once it becomes real. Everything that you set your eye on could already be recorded. Yay or nay?
