Time management is one of the skills many engineering students lack and yet, to be able to finish this difficult course, it’s one of the skills they should master. Time management is important especially for engineering students since they have a lot of challenging projects they need to finish within a predefined number of months. Usually, due to the number of projects that are needed to be done simultaneously, many students get confused on which they should prioritize. Is it the quiz tomorrow? The project for a certain subject? The 50-page report due this afternoon? Or the presentation the next day?

That’s why we’ve created a list of  practical time management tips that will help you organize your school activities.

#1  Visualize Your Future

Sometimes, the best motivation is one that comes from yourself. No matter how much advice you receive and motivational videos you watch on YouTube, unless you get the motivation from yourself, you won’t be able to manage your time well. Try to answer the “Why did you take this engineering course?” It may give you the purpose you need to get that motivation to push you to manage your time well.

Try visualizing yourself of what you’re going to become once you graduate from your engineering course. Then look for a photo of that end goad from the internet, magazine, or anywhere, print it and stick it on your wall or turn it into the wallpaper of your phone. Keep looking at it. This will let you remember your end goals and motivate you to manage your time well.

#2 Establish Your Priorities

In every activity, it’s good to know which activities you should prioritize first. So here are some tips.

  • Overall Plan – List down your sub
  • jects for each semester.
  • Monthly Plan – Keep the exam dates in mind, then work backwards and create a list of subjects you will be covering each month.
  • Weekly Plan – Next, break up the subjects into chapters and list down the chapters you will cover every week.
  • Compare  your plans with the classroom lectures.

#3 Keep a planner

A planner can serve as your time management tool, so you can keep track of your time and progress at regular intervals. If you’re not comfortable carrying an actual planner around, you can always download a planner app on your smartphones–just make sure to check it on a regular basis. Use this to schedule your exams, homeworks, projects, etc.

#4 Visit your plans on a regular basis

The key to good time management is to take note of your progress regularly. There are people who have awesome resolutions, then follow their plans for a few days, but it only lasts for a few weeks and will soon fade away. The reason? They don’t revisit their plans regularly and forget the purpose why they made the resolution in the first place.

#5 Have a good partner

He/she may be an actual school project partner, a significant other, a brother or a sister, anyone who can motivate you to achieve your goals and manage your time. You can share your plans with them and they’ll remind you of your progress. In turn, you could also be their partners.
