Who knew that pooping can cause NASA problems? We all do it in the comforts of our own bathrooms. You’re probably doing it now as you read this. Of course, astronauts also do this in space. While NASA has created an efficient way to help people in space do so, it still has pooping concerns.

Normally, astronauts use a vacuum-powered toilet that sucks the poop away from the body. The feces collected is then released to the atmosphere, where it would look like shooting stars. Unfortunately, the pooping case is not the same when astronauts wait for launching and landing while they’re on their spacesuits. Astronauts use diapers as its temporary solution but if the poop stays there longer than one day, it will be unhealthy for the astronaut. When the poop stays in the suit for six days in low (or zero) gravity, the poop will stick in the astronauts’ skins. Gross and very unhealthy!
This is the part where your imaginative and science-backed idea comes in. NASA is holding a competition that will help them find a solution to their pooping problem. This competition will end on December 20 so how about you start thinking of creative ways to fix this problem? Don’t worry. You’ll get paid $30,000 if they choose your idea. If you’re 18 years old or above, you can join the contest as long as your submit your idea in English.
