Google Plans To Launch A Job Search Engine

Job hunting would be a breeze.

Recently, Google announced their plan to launch their newest job search engine, called “Google for Jobs”, in the US. The service shall encompass all kinds of jobs, from entry level to service to high-end professional jobs. The search engine will naturally use Google’s signature AI technologies to help understand how jobs are classified and related. This would enhance the experience of any eager job-hunter to find the job they truly feel would fit them best.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, had given a sneak preview of Google for Jobs at the Google developer conference I/O yesterday.

“46% of U.S. employers say they face talent shortages and have issues filling open job positions,” explained Pichai. “While job seekers may be looking for openings right next door – there’s a big disconnect here…We want to better connect employers and job seekers through a new initiative, Google for Jobs.”

Within a few weeks’ time, Google will be able to recognize whether or not users from the US are searching for job opportunities on the search query through their algorithms. Google will then show the results and highlight the jobs that fit the searched query. In this latest installment of the engine however, Google isn’t simply taking and showing results from traditional job service providers. This time around, they’ve partnered with them.

Partners will include LinkedIn, Facebook, Careerbuilder Monster, Glassdoor, and some other services, among others.

How it Works

The search engine will also come with a few handy tools, like filters that’ll let you sort results out by location, title, category or type, date posted, and whether it’s full or part time. It’ll also show users other useful information like commute time from their current location, to help the user know whether the job is too far to consider.

The most intriguing part of Google for Jobs is its technical aspect wherein it uses Google’s machine-learning AI system to understand job titles and how they’re related to each other in order to cluster them together for better results.

I.e. when someone types in “retail”, the user could either mean “retail associate”, “store clerk”, or “store manager”, all depending on how the employer described the job position. Google will be able to stitch all of these together, hence searching for retail will come up with all the matching job types.

Also, Pichai said that Google for Jobs also came with a neat one-click “Apply” feature, that’ll let you press a blue button to submit your application, but he didn’t go into any further detail as to how it works.

Google also has been coordinating with hundreds of users to help beta-test the feature and ask them on what they disliked and what the engine could improve on.

“I’m personally enthusiastic for this initiative because it addresses an important need and taps our core capabilities as a company from searching and organizing information to A.I. and machine learning,” said Pichai.

The job search engine shall roll out in the US in a few weeks, and more countries will be able to experience this in the future.
